Oscar - Scientific and Engineering Award

opsira is pleased to announce that Volker Schumacher has been chosen to receive one of the most prestigious honors in the film industry, a Scientific and Engineering Award from Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for the optical development of the ARRIMAX 18/12 HMI. He has been chosen to receive the Award together with the project partners Erwin Melzner and Timo Mueller, staff members of the ARRI company in Germany. Not since 2004 has an AMPAS Scientific and Technical award been given for advancement in lighting equipment. The Award in the form of an Academy Plaque will be officially presented to the three honorees during a ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA on Feb. 7, 2009.

The ARRIMAX combines the variable beam spread of a Fresnel and the light output of a PAR, and uses a unique reflector concept for beam control that eliminates the need for spread lenses. AMPAS notes, “With its choice of vari-focus and specular reflectors, the superior optical and mechanical design of this lighting fixture allows it to operate at 18,000 watts, producing unsurpassed light quality while its innovative cooling system keeps the housing safe to touch.”

AMPAS has distinguished Volker Schumacher, CEO opsira GmbH and Head of the Optical Engineering Group, for the optical concept, optical development, simulations and optimisation, Erwin Melzner, Head of Research & Development of Arnold & Richter Cine Technik GmbH (ARRI), for the overall concept and product development. Timo Mueller, Product Manager Location Lighting of ARRI, will be credited for concept and mechanical design.

The new ARRIMAX has already proven itself as a very popular and versatile tool in professional movie lighting for feature films, commercials and television.
The acknowledgment by the academy honors also the talented team of people who worked so hard in the two companies to support the three recipients. Furthermore it’s a commendation for the professional and successful cooperation between ARRI as the market leader in professional motion picture equipment and opsira as highly skilled specialist in professional optic design.

Since 1930, AMPAS has conducted a program for honoring artisans whose contributions have made it possible for the movie industry to exist and evolve. Approximately 45 people constitute the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee representing cinematography (production and technical), digital imaging, electronics and research, film and laboratory, lighting and equipment, mechanical or optical effects and engineering, production, projection, exhibition techniques and sound.
